Maria Chertok is the Director of CAF Russia, a member of the Charities Aid Foundation global alliance. Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) is a non-profit organization committed to motivating society to give ever more effectively, helping to transform lives and communities around the world. Since opening in 1993, CAF Russia has given life to over 300 initiatives aimed at solving a wide range of social problems and improving life across the country, and the organization plays a key role in representing the needs of donors and the charitable sector before policy-makers.
 
Maria has been working with CAF Russia since 1997 and became its Director in 2005. Over her long career, she has been involved in a number of exciting innovations in the Russian philanthropic sector, including the development of the community foundation model, the promotion of corporate giving, and the growth of private foundations. In 2009, Maria was named one of ten most influential philanthropy professionals in Russia by Russian Reporter magazine. Maria is Chair of WINGS (World Initiatives for Grantmaker Support), a member of the editorial board of Alliancemagazine, and a co-organizer of the Olga Alexeeva Memorial Prize. She has authored a number of articles and research materials on various aspects of philanthropy and civil society in Russia and globally. In the past, Maria served as a council member of the Russian Donors Forum, a steering committee member of Grantmakers East Group of the European Foundation Centre, and a trustee of Philanthropy Bridge Foundation (UK). Before joining CAF Russia, Maria worked at the Moscow office of the Ford Foundation. She graduated cum laude in sociology from the Moscow State University.
