Ashley Green-Thompson has spent more than 25 years working in community development and social justice campaigning in the Southern Africa region. He holds a degree in African Politics and Law from the University of Witwatersrand and in 1997 became the first layperson to head the Justice and Peace Department of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference, coordinating the Catholic Church’s human rights and advocacy work. He joined the South African National NGO Coalition (SANGOCO) in 2001 and coordinated various civil society advocacy processes around the UN’s World Conference Against Racism and the World Summit on Sustainable Development. He was appointed National Director of the SA Network of Trauma Service Providers, which provided grantmaking and other support in the victim empowerment field. He spent five years as the Grants Manager at the Southern Africa Trust, a foundation supporting voice and agency of civil society organisations to better influence public policy processes within the Southern African Development Community. Since 2012, Ashley has provided organisational support and research services to diverse clients, including Oxfam International, Africa Philanthropy Network (formerly AGN), African Women’s Development Fund, National Treasury: SA Government, and the Foundation for Human Rights. He currently provides grant management support to The OTHER Foundation, an African trust that advances human rights in Southern Africa, with a particular focus on LGBTI people. Ashley lives in Swaziland and serves on the governing council of Waterford Kamhlaba, United World Colleges of Southern Africa.
